Rohde & Schwarz Handheld Analyzers for Mobile Spectrum Analysis

(Product News, 18 Nov 2008)

Rohde & Schwarz has launched two rugged, handy and lightweight all-purpose instruments for mobile spectrum analysis: the R&S FSH4 and the R&S FSH8, which cover the frequency range from 9kHz to 3.6GHz or 8GHz. Depending on the options installed, the instruments can also be used as two-port vector network analyzers, as cable and antenna testers or as power meters—supporting almost all RF measurement tasks encountered in service, installation and maintenance applications.

The R&S FSH analyzers can perform up to 4.5 hours of operation with its battery. If the field work takes longer, on-site replacement of the battery poses no problem. Since the R&S FSH analyzers conform to protection class IP51 and feature splash-proof, dust-protected connectors, they are reliable tools even under adverse ambient conditions.

In addition, the analyzers' vertical design makes them extremely handy. The user can easily reach all keys without having to put down the instrument. Flat menu structures and separate keys for frequently used functions help ensure efficient work. The large, high-contrast VGA color display is easy to read even under difficult lighting conditions.

The R&S FSH4 and the R&S FSH8 feature average noise level of -163dBm (1Hz) at 2GHz and a preamplifier that can be activated on all models can measure even very small signals reliably. In the presence of multiple strong signals, the analyzers' large-signal immunity helps prevent internal interference. Featuring third-order intercept of 15dBm in the common mobile radio bands, the analyzers perform comparably to high-end desktop models. The level measurement uncertainty is low and amounts to 1dB (max.) for measurements up to 3.6GHz and 1.5dB (max.) for measurements up to 8GHz.

Besides the base models, Rohde & Schwarz offers models with built-in tracking generator as well as models with an integrated VSWR bridge for vector network analysis. Sensors that are also available from Rohde & Schwarz convert the R&S FSH4 and the R&S FSH8 into high-precision power meters. This means that the analyzers provide all the functions for the installation and maintenance of radio transmitter systems in a single box: assessment of transmission spectrum, detection of interference, measurement of transmit power, checking of antenna matching, verification of the amplifiers on the antenna, and measurement of the antenna cable quality.

Windows software is supplied with the analyzers for recording and evaluating measurement results. The software also supports maintenance teams with large equipment pools in administering instrument setups. This feature eliminates the need to configure each instrument separately. The analyzer connects to a PC via LAN or USB interface. Since practically all functions can be remote-controlled, the handheld analyzers can be integrated into customer-specific programs.
