Mobile Video Gets Boost from India

(Business News & Technology News, 28 Aug 2008)

Having launched globally only a couple of months ago, Clippz, the world's first free mobile video service, has successfully established itself in the Indian mobile video market, now attracting more than 600,000 people in India per month.

With a 93 percent male user base with an average age of 25, Clippz is the dominating platform for this audience. Clippz offers thousands of free video clips on its website www.clippz.com, which users can easily preview, download to PCs and then transfer to their mobile device in an optimised format. High quality mobile video usually involves huge costs in downloading content from an operator's network directly. Clippz is the alternative for people who want to watch and share the newest video clips and still control their mobile costs and use their tariffs to talk to their friends and family.

Clippz operates on a global basis, and the Indian market has quickly emerged as the largest. "India is our single largest consumer of content," says Philip John, Founder and CEO of Clippz. "It seems like there is an insatiable demand for mobile videos in India. None of the mobile operators here can deliver as many videos as we do. With the 3G spectrum now being open for auction, this is going to be great for web access on a mobile device, but it will not be necessary for mobile video. We already deliver video at better than 3G quality and it's completely free.

John adds that with the first mobile operators in India starting to offer mobile videos now, these services are being priced and limited in choice as the operators define and provide the content viewable for their customers. "Our multitude of clips as well as our support of media players like the iPod and the iPhone makes our service unique and overwhelming when compared to what is available from operators," he says.

All video clips on the Clippz website are encoded in multiple different formats. Simply by choosing their device from a list, users are ensured of a huge range of videos optimised specifically for their device.

Clippz also uses technology which can automatically insert content, such as an advertisement or a trailer, into a video clip before it is previewed or downloaded. In July 2008, there were 2 million previews and 200,000 downloads in India. Advertisers can use the huge potential of Clippz by uploading exclusive content such as a movie trailer or by placing a specific advertisement within a popular video.

Clippz supports more than 200 different mobile devices, including iPhones and iPods. The use of the website is absolutely free of charge and completely parent safe, with no pornographic content.
