WiMAX Forum Open Software Testing Simulator Now Available

(Top News, 25 Aug 2008)

The WiMAX Forum has released its open source system level simulator to characterize applications over WiMAX networks. Available to all WiMAX Forum member companies, this NS-2 based testing application tool provides a unified simulation tool based on the WiMAX Forum's system profiles and facilitates sharing of results and publication of technical papers.

The WiMAX Forum NS-2 Simulator enables vendors and service providers to test an applications performance over WiMAX networks, such as voice over Internet protocol (VoIP). The simulator will help vendors evaluate schedulder algorithms and technical solutions, in addition to helping service providers perform network planning, capacity evaluation and product evaluation. Testing in this simulated environment allows the tester to optimize the performance experienced while decreasing the costs associated with testing on a live network.

"This tool is another added benefit available to WiMAX Forum member companies," says Tom Tofigh, Chairman of the WiMAX Forum's Application Working Group. "The WiMAX Forum Application Working Group worked with industrial partners, academia and research institutes to develop this open source system level simulator that will help stimulate the development of killer applications for the WiMAX industry. WiMAX is a flexible technology that enables broadband connectivity for a wide range of users, from fixed WiMAX enterprise services to wireless services for consumers in remote, rural or densely populated areas. WiMAX technology will open the doors for a new generation of applications that have not been realized on today's existing telecommunications infrastructure."

The NS-2 Simulator can port a user specific scheduler, evaluate end-to-end performance and conduct network and capacity planning to identify the best deployment strategy and practices. More than 200 users pre-registered for access to the application.
