WiChorus and ZyXEL Completes WiMAX Interoperability Testing
(Business News & Technology News, 6 Aug 2008)
WiChorus and ZyXEL have successfully completed interoperability testing (IOT) between WiChorus' Intelligent ASN gateway and ZyXEL's Base Station.
Leveraging the WiMAX Forum's NWG Release 1 specification, WiChorus and ZyXEL demonstrated interoperability with the R6 network interface. With a standard, open R6 interface, mobile operators have the flexibility to choose from a large ecosystem of best-of-breed equipment including base stations and ASN gateways. Without a standard interface, service providers get locked in to a proprietary solution that limits deployment and service options and inflates costs.
"ZyXEL is working with partners like WiChorus to provide our customers with best-of-breed end-to-end WiMAX solutions," says Dr. Yuh-Long Chen, President of ZyXEL. "Together we offer our customers the flexibility to build out their infrastructure in a cost-effective fashion. WiChorus' commitment to a truly open ecosystem is directly in line with our interoperability strategy. Through our successfully completed IOT with WiChorus, we believe we have enhanced our value proposition to customers."
"WiChorus and its One Open WiMAX partners are working to transform a traditionally closed wireless core into an open, horizontal model that spurs innovation and competition and provides more choices for carriers," says Rehan Jalil, President and CEO, WiChorus. "By working directly with major broadband technology suppliers like ZyXEL, WiChorus has facilitated the adoption of a single open R6 interface that gives operators the choice and flexibility needed to deploy profitable WiMAX networks."
The One Open WiMAX initiative has accelerated the availability of WiMAX Forum-compliant infrastructure equipment; ensuring service providers have the option to combine best-of-breed equipment to build their networks. WiChorus is making the goal of an open ecosystem a reality through its participation in the WiMAX Forum and its industry-leading One Open WiMAX initiative. The goal of this initiative is to ensure fully open WiMAX standards, including the adoption of a single open R6 interface, and to demonstrate multi-vendor interoperability across the entire mobile ecosystem. With a standard, open R6 interface, mobile operators have the flexibility to choose from a large ecosystem of best-of-breed equipment, including base stations and ASN gateways.
