STMicroelectronics Wins the European Prize for "Mobility Management in Companies"

(Business News & Technology News, 1 Jul 2008)

STMicroelectronics has received the European prize from the European Platform on Mobility Management (EPOMM) for the excellence of its Mobility Management plan implemented at its Grenoble site, based in the Rhone-Alpes Region (France). The award was presented to ST out of 21 applications from companies, following an in-depth assessment process.

The assessment gave ST an opportunity to demonstrate how its employees have switched to environment-friendly modes of transport based on the plan. The ST plan included pre-assessment of the travel pattern of its employees; the impact of that travel on the environment, particularly CO2 emissions; and included ambitious but realistic objectives. The plan provided a coherent package of measures, including communications, parking management, incentives to use public transport, and on-site infrastructure, to facilitate shifts in mobility. Anchored in the company's overall environmental management strategy, ST's plan included consultation with local authorities, and considered the financial impact on the company.

The award was judged by an international panel of high-level experts on mobility issues and representatives of International Transport Forum (ITF) member countries. The ITF brings together the Transport Ministers of 51 countries and is an inter-governmental organization within the OECD, established as a successor to the European Conference of Ministers of Transport (ECMT), which for more than fifty years has contributed to creating an integrated transport system that economically efficient and meets environmental and safety standards.

This recognition acknowledges ST's leadership in sustainable excellence. The ST Grenoble site's achievements are an example of innovations in the field of Mobility with the company's first "Plan for Mobility in Companies" (PDE, Plan de Déplacement d'Entreprise) initiated by ST in France eight years ago. Impressive results were obtained in 2008 in Grenoble with more than 54 percent of employees using alternative transport modes compared to less than 20 percent when the plan started. Last year, ST Grenoble employees didn't emit more than 1,000 tons of CO2 by changing their transportation habits as a result of options created by the ST Grenoble site management.

The award was presented in Leipzig during the International Transport Forum. The award was also presented during the European Conference on Mobility Management (ECOMM) in London, Europe's biggest conference dedicated to sustainable transport, which examines leading-edge best practice, policy and projects in this field.
