Asia Leads Worldwide WiMAX Adoption, says Coresonic
(Business News & Technology News, 10 Apr 2008)
Asia is at the forefront of WiMAX adoption worldwide, according to Rick Clucas, CEO of Coresonic, a baseband processor technology provider based in Sweden. "While Western Europe and the USA may be PC and mobile phone centric, Asia is really going to be the key market for adoption of connectivity in a much wider range of consumer devices," he said. "This is the market where we will see literally anything with a display being a potential application for using WiMAX."
At the WiMAX Forum Asia Congress 2008 Conference being held this week in Singapore, Coresonic is currently exhibiting its portfolio of complete hardware solutions that allow manufacturers to quickly and cost-effectively implement WiMAX functionality into their semiconductor devices. Its latest product, the new WiMAX "personality pack", which is based on the company's LeoCore programmable baseband processor technology, provides complete IEEE802.16 functionality, from the RF interface through to the central processor interface.
The personality pack supports the mobile WiMAX 802.16e-2005 mobile system profile rev 1.4, which will support other modes such as 802.16d and 802.16j. The pack performs everything from ADC/DAC interface to FEC, including digital front-end signal conditioning, synchronization, MIMO channel estimation/compensation, error correction and chase combing. All blocks provided enable a complete solution from the RF interface to interfacing to a CPU (central processor) to run the MAC layer; the processing intensive elements are implemented in hardware to minimize the load on the MAC CPU.
