Fujitsu Upgrades Japan-US Cable Network

(Business News & Technology News, 28 Mar 2008)

Fujitsu Ltd has successfully completed an upgrade of the Japan-US Cable Network, a submarine fiber-optic cable system spanning the Pacific Ocean. Fujitsu's technology allows the network to carry a capacity of more than 1.28Tbps, doubling the original design capacity of 640Gbps to support growing demand for high-speed, high-capacity trans-Pacific communications.

To realize the upgrade, Fujitsu replaced legacy optical communications equipment with its high-performance FLASHWAVE S650 series in six landing points—three each in the US and Japan. The submerged portion of the network remained unchanged. The upgrade began shortly after Fujitsu signed the contract with Japan-US CN Owners' consortium in May 2007.

The consortium represents the telecommunications carriers AT&T Corp., Cable and Wireless plc, KDDI Corp., NTT Communications Corp., Qwest Communications International Inc., Reach Global Networks Ltd, Softbank Telecom Corp., and Verizon Business.
