Avago Technologies Launches Latest Power Amplifiers for WiMAX, Next-Gen Cellular Networks

(Product News, 28 Mar 2008)

Avago Technologies has released two new power amplifier product families designed for next generation cellular and WiMAX applications. Avago's MGA-30116, MGA-30216 and MGA-30316 family of half-watt basestation power amplifiers and the ALM-42316 low-voltage power amplifier for mobile handset and fixed terminals support cellular (GSM, CDMA, WCDMA, CDMA2000 and TD-SCDMA) and WiMAX frequencies.

The ultra-small WiMAX power amplifiers are fully matched to simplify product design and speed the time to market. These power amplifiers are effectively architected for the entire chain of WiMAX product design needs from mobile handsets to customer premise equipment (CPE) and base stations.

More specifically, the ALM-42316 delivers 23dBm linear output power (2.5 percent EVM at 64 QAM OFDM) and a high gain of 30dB when operated at 3.3V and 400mA. With built-in detector, bypass switch and shutdown function, the ALM-42316 is designed for (802.16e) mobile terminals operating in the 3.3GHz to 3.8GHz frequency band and is housed in a 5x5x1.1mm molded chip-on-board (MCOB) package. ALM-42216, which is a follow up product with similarly impressive performance in 2.3GHz to 2.7GHz WiMAX frequency band, will be market released by the end of April 2008.

The half watt MGA-30x16 family of power amplifiers provides very high linearity and exceptional PAE (power added efficiency) at 1dB gain compression point. It enables a common footprint and PCB layout for base station applications ranging from 750MHz to 3.9GHz. The MGA-30x16 family of power amplifiers is housed in a miniature 3x3x0.85mm 16-pin quad-flat-non-lead (QFN) package which allows for the design of highly compact next-generation base station equipment, such as pico or femtocell base station receivers.
