Despite 3G/4G Gains, 2G Technologies to Dominate through 2012

(Business News & Technology News, 13 Mar 2008)

2007 was another strong year for HSPA wireless deployments, especially for HSUPA which had 28 deployments, according to market research firm In-Stat. The 3G and 4G wireless subscriber base also made impressive gains last year, with subscribers to mobile broadband services growing 91 percent in 2007. Despite these gains, 2G technologies are still expected to dominate the total cellular subscriber base through 2012. CDMA2000/CDMAOne and GSM/GPRS/EDGE accounted for over 90 percent of total cellular subscribers in 2007. By the end of 2012, In-Stat expects that 2G technologies will still account for over 70 percent of the worldwide cellular subscriber base.

In its new research service report, In-Stat also found out the following:
- A 63 percent growth rate is expected in mobile broadband subscribers in 2008, with total subscribers rising from 230 million in 2007 to 375 million in 2008.

- By the end of 2012, there will be approximately 970 million mobile broadband subscribers worldwide.

- 4Q07 was another strong quarter for HSDPA and HSUPA deployments. There were eight HSDPA and nine HSUPA deployments scattered globally.
