Texas Instruments Launches 2.4GHz RF Transceiver for ZigBee/IEEE 802.15.4 Applications

(Product News, 10 Mar 2008)

Texas Instruments Inc. (TI) has developed its second-generation ZigBee/IEEE 802.15.4 radio-frequency (RF) transceiver—the CC2520—designed for the 2.4GHz unlicensed ISM (industrial, scientific, medical) frequency band. The device targets a wide variety of ZigBee/IEEE 802.15.4 and proprietary wireless systems used in industrial monitoring and control, home and building automation, set-top boxes, remote controls and wireless sensor networks.

The CC2520 will be used together with a microcontroller, such as TI's MSP430 ultra-low power MCUs, and a few additional passive components. The CC2520 reduces the load on the host controller by providing extensive hardware support for packet handling, data buffering, burst transmissions, data encryption, data authentication, clear channel assessment, link quality indication and packet timing information. The MSP430 MCU series is ideal for ZigBee-based applications due to its highly integrated peripherals like dynamic memory access (DMA) and digital-to-analog (DAC) and analog-to-digital converters (ADC) that provide high performance yet consume very little power.

Other key specifications for the CC2520 include: supply range, 1.8V to 3.8V; temperature range, -40°C to +125°C; link budget (400m line-of-sight range with the development kit), 103dB; and adjacent channel rejection, 50dB. The CC2520 provides an easy upgrade path for the CC2420 RF transceiver.
