Mobile WiMAX Market Up 130% in 2Q07

(Business News & Technology News, 12 Oct 2007)

The mobile WiMAX equipment market, still limited to a handful of service provider rollouts, jumped 130% in 2Q07 over 1Q07 to hit $144.5 million, according to the latest "WiMAX and Outdoor Mesh Network Equipment" report of Infonetics Research.

Meanwhile, after sequentially dropping 40% in 1Q07, the fixed WiMAX market rebounded a bit, increasing 9% in 2Q07, the report shows.

"While the outdoor wireless mesh access node segment dropped 20% between the first quarter and second quarter, we expect the market to see healthy double-digit growth next quarter and strong long-term growth, especially now that major network vendors such as Cisco, Motorola, and Nortel have entered the space. The market will also get a boost once the mesh concept catches on beyond North America," said Richard Webb, wireless broadband analyst for Infonetics Research.

More highlights from the report:
- The worldwide fixed and mobile WiMAX equipment market is forecast to grow at a phenomenal 5-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 89% between 2006 and 2010
- 2Q07 marks the inflection point when mobile WiMAX equipment sales outpace fixed WiMAX equipment
- Alvarion continues to lead in fixed WiMAX equipment revenue share, followed by Airspan, then Aperto
- Tropos Networks and Strix are neck and neck in the battle for leadership in outdoor mesh equipment revenue in 2Q07; BelAir moves up to 3rd
- 43% of all mobile WiMAX equipment revenue comes from Asia Pacific in 2Q07, 31% from North America, 17% from EMEA, and 9% from CALA
