Organizations and Universities From Around the World to Present at Upcoming SDR Forum Technology Conference

The Software Defined Radio (SDR) Forum will hold its annual technical conference and product exposition November 5-9 in Denver. The event, which includes the Forum's general meeting, will focus on software defined and cognitive radio technologies, standards and business activities and provide an international perspective of the current state of the art for advanced wireless communications.

Highlighting this year's conference will be more than 130 papers presented by an international array of organizations in the commercial, civil and defense communications markets, including General Dynamics, Motorola, Northrop Grumman, Rohde & Schwarz, Alcatel-Lucent Deutschland, NAVSYS, Thales Communications, the U.S. Department of Defense, and NASA. Leading academic institutions from around the world will also present, including Virginia Tech, Penn State, Rutgers, University of Colorado, University of Illinois, San Diego State University, Trinity College (Ireland), University of Athens (Greece), University of Surrey (England), Telecom Italia Lab University of Piraeus (Italy), Hanyang University (South Korea), and Yokohama National University (Japan). Topics will include:

- cognitive radio implications for public safety communications;
- mitigating the cost of information assurance in the SDR environment;
- international collaboration for a cognitive radio testbed;
- SDR multi-standard base stations as a key to future cognitive radio networks;
- beamforming as an optimal approach for space-based GPS applications; and
- using SDRs for precise positioning and attitude determination of microsatellites.

Among the keynote speakers for the SDR '07 conference will be Shuzo Kato—program director for ubiquitous mobile communications at National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) of Japan and President of Pacific Star Communications—whose talk is titled "Cognitive Radio for Best Spectrum Utilization through SDR—Various Definitions and Implications." Another keynote, "The Often Forgotten Layer 8," will be provided by Ian Farrell, Director of wireless incubation at Microsoft, and will explore the promise of SDR in supporting universal wireless connectivity.

The Forum will also present the winners of its Smart Radio Challenge '07 and the qualifying teams for the 2008 edition; the Smart Radio Challenge is a worldwide competition in which student engineering teams design, develop and test software defined and cognitive radio technologies that address specific problems relevant to the advanced wireless community. In addition, candidates for the SDR Forum Hall of Fame will be announced.

A number of product announcements are expected at the exposition, which will feature products and services from more than 25 companies involved in the advanced wireless market's value chain. Exhibitors will include Forum members General Dynamics C4 Systems, Objective Interface Systems, PrismTech, Spectrum Signal Processing, Xilinx, and Zeligsoft—who are among the event's sponsors—and other members such as Elektrobit, Etherstack, GE Fanuc, Lyrtech, Pentek, Radstone, Space Coast Communications Systems, Synplicity, and Vanu. Also exhibiting, as well as sponsoring, will be Green Hills Software.

The Forum's technical conference, product expo and general meeting will take place at the Denver Marriott Tech Center and are open to anyone interested in SDR technology, including non-Forum members.
