Motorola strengthens emerging markets presence with new head of technology for South and East Asia

Motorola Inc. today announced the appointment of Dr. Ray Owen as head of technology for South and East Asia, Motorola Networks & Enterprise. Dr. Owen, an expert in wireless broadband technologies, will work closely with Motorola Networks & Enterprise's customers to pursue new business opportunities by providing strategic consultancy on technology and solution development.

The appointment of Dr. Owen underscores Motorola's commitment to the fast emerging markets of South and East Asia, where he will take the lead in cultivating relationships with major governments, enterprises and carrier network customers in the region.

In his role as head of technology, Dr. Owen will provide high level guidance on technical strategy covering Motorola's solution portfolio. This includes TETRA, GSM, UMTS, and MOTOwi4 wireless broadband solutions such as WiMAX, Mesh WiFi, Canopy, wireless backhaul, and Broadband over Power Line (BPL), as well as MOTOwi4 services.

Jay Andersen, vice president, sales for South and East Asia, Motorola Networks & Enterprise, said: "Ray is one of the most creative and technologically-savvy people I have met. His inventiveness, combined with his deep telecommunications expertise and sharp business acumen, will help our customers find the ideal path in deploying next-generation networks."

Dr. Owen is based in Vietnam, the world's second-fastest growing economy after China. "There is tremendous potential for seamless mobility solutions in this region," said Dr. Owen. "Wireless voice and data services are clearly a catalyst for social and economic growth. As operators and end-users in the region embrace change, Motorola will continue to deliver innovative products and services to them."

A 12-year Motorola veteran, Dr. Owen has held key management positions in the company. His previous roles include director for Wireless Broadband, Motorola Networks & Enterprise, Asia Pacific based in Sydney, Australia, as well as solutions architect for Motorola Asia Pacific, where he headed the management of UMTS architecture design for customers.

Dr. Owen holds a PhD in Engineering from the University of Birmingham. He has also published 19 papers and developed 32 patents, one of which won him an award for Motorola's Patent Application of the Year in 1999.
