BTI Announces Muxponder for BTI 7000 Series

(Product News, 30 Jun 2009)

BTI Systems, a global supplier of intelligent service edge solutions for the delivery of high-bandwidth, multi-protocol services, has announced a new 8-port multiprotocol Muxponder for the BTI 7000 client service module portfolio, aimed at both service provider and enterprise customers.

The 8-port multiprotocol muxponder (8-port MXP) is an integrated client service module within the BTI 7000 series that provides client protocol aggregation onto 2.5Gbps wavelengths for a wide variety of protocols used in today’s service provider and enterprise networks. The 8-port MXP is an effective solution for transitioning to a packet-enabled infrastructure; it converges low-speed SONET/SDH with key data protocol networking. The client ports are software programmable to address any mix of Gigabit Ethernet, Fibre Channel (1G/2G), SONET/SDH (OC-3/12, STM-1/4), and SD-SDI video.

The module, as part of a BTI 7000 Series network deployment is targeted to address wireless backhaul and Ethernet Private Line business service networking. The 8-port MXP provides Ethernet-based wireless data traffic offload from low speed TDM circuits and converges the SONET/SDH access ring—for voice traffic—onto the same wavelength. This strategy provides increased capacity and an improved user experience for 3G data-centric mobile communications. Leveraging Generic Framing Procedure (GFP) and Virtual Concatenation (VCAT), Gigabit Ethernet clients can be allocated sufficient bandwidth to address full-rate connectivity, or sub-rated using STS-1 (50 Mbps) or VC-4 (155 Mbps) bandwidth increments for Ethernet Private Line (EPL) services as part of an Ethernet business services portfolio.

BTI’s innovative two line port muxponder architecture offers network administrators the ability to configure the 8-port MXP for unprotected single- and dual-line, 1+1 facility, and ring-based protection. In addition, ring-based line mapping modes and the integrated switch fabric allows the 8-port MXP’s wavelength to be shared between multiple sites on a WDM ring and client signals to be cross connected between any location.

ITU G.709 Optical Transport Network (OTN) and SONET/SDH wavelength encapsulation strategies are offered to enable convergence, network interoperability, and a simplified operational model for network administration, performance monitoring and in-band management.

“The 8-port MXP addresses a diverse set of requirements in service provider and enterprise networks. Network blueprints continually show a move from SONET/SDH to WDM and the inclusion of an Ethernet-based service layer” commented JC Fahmy, VP Product Management, BTI Systems. “The 8-port MXP provides an effective approach to integrating legacy connectivity into a WDM network and delivers a strategy that can adapt as customers transition their networks from TDM to packet.”
