América Móvil Launches SDR-based GSM/UMTS Converged Network Using Huawei’s SingleRAN Solution

(Business News & Technology News, 29 May 2009)

Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd and América Móvil announced that América Móvil (AMX) has launched the “world’s first” SDR -based GSM/UMTS converged network in Panama. The network uses Huawei’s SingleRAN solution, which allows AMX to simultaneously provide end-users with reliable voice and data services from GSM and UMTS 1900MHz based networks at the same time. With operators exploring ways to simplify network deployment and evolution, Huawei’s SingleRAN solution, which is built on the vision of one for all, offers customers long-term commercial viability, maximized TCO savings and optimized human resources through one network, one deployment, one team.

In Asia especially, where operators need to respond to fast-changing market demand by deploying new technologies, the SingleRAN solution offers customers peace of mind as it is the industry’s first truly convergent solution that meets all foreseeable primary network needs, said Mr. Thong Poh Wah, Director, Asia Pacific Marketing and Strategy Development, Huawei. We hope that operators in this region can also enjoy the enormous advantages of the SingleRAN solution that our customers around the world have benefited from.

Huawei’s solution for AMX is end-to-end — from network planning to network deployment. Using Huawei’s SDR-based 4th generation base station, AMX’s GSM and UMTS services can now be supported simultaneously from a single BTS (base transceiver station). When user demands need to be shifted between GSM and UMTS services, the SingleRAN solution enables AMX to realize effective operation and management through a simple software update. With the commercial launch of GSM/UMTS, AMX’s customers will now be able to experience enriched communications services including rich voice, video and data services in Panama. Huawei’s SingleRAN solution enables operators to achieve full convergence of multi-mode wireless networks, including base stations, base station controllers, sites and operation and maintenance management. SDR is used to configure the radio frequency operating parameters through software. Currently, different radio technology standards can be managed at the same frequency band.
